Otto Lilienthal was a German aviation pioneer who made important early contributions to aviation through his glider designs and research on bird flight between 1891-1896. He built and tested over 18 different glider designs, gathering valuable data on flight. Unfortunately, his career was cut short when he died in a gliding accident in 1896 at the age of 48, having sacrificed himself in the name of aviation progress through his experimental research.
